North

Elis Arthur Matthewson

Elis is extremely good at listening. When Elis is in the control room and is supervisor on shift, he listens out for anyone struggling from his desk or on a difficult call and is there instantly for support. He will take you out straight away on a one to one when you have experienced a difficult call and will sit and actively listen to your concerns and worries and do what he can to help.

Gina Hughes

For me, Gina is by far the manager of the year. Over the last few months, the service and the team have had to struggle through some difficult times and the team morale here in North has been low. Gina, being the star that she is, has gone above and beyond to listen to her team, taken on board their feelings and has helped increase staff wellbeing. Despite the current changes that have taken place, Gina is always willing to listen to her team, even when the struggle is real for her.

Steve Wilson

Steven Wilson takes listening to a different level. Steven is someone you can bounce ideas off — and rather than absorbing your ideas and energy, Steven amplifies, energises, and clarifies our thinking, encouraging, and supporting us to work to a higher standard and improve our skills. Steven Wilson has made us understand and feel better by not merely passively absorbing, but by actively supporting. This helps us, his team gain energy and enthusiasm for learning and working for NHS 111 Wales and the people of Wales - inspirational leadership at its best.

Ron Roberts

It is unlikely that you could find a member of staff within North Wales that doesn't know who Ron is, as throughout his years he has been one of the most approachable and friendly people you could come across. Over the years, Ron has welcomed many new starters into the station and locality with open arms and equally has said a fond farewell to many. Ron is one of few colleagues who has the ability to make patients and their families feel better through the art of communication.

Mark Timmins

I work as an Emergency Medical Technician within Mark's locality and at the start of this year I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. As well as a great manager who supported me having time off for hospital appointments and for my operation, Mark has also been there as a listener. He has listened to me when times have not been great, and I have struggled with diagnosis as cancer isn't there greatest of things. During my time off, following my operation, Mark was there to listen and gave me advice and has always said that if I needed him to call him, with his office door being always open for a chat if needed.

Anita Owen

In January 2021 we had a family tragedy and Anita was there for me. I have been through a really difficult time, and she has been so supportive, listened to me when I was at my lowest. At the beginning she came over to my home and just listened to whatever I was able to talk about. She is always at the other end of the phone for a chat for reassurance or just to listen, whether it be during working hours or at home. She is still supporting me today, as well as the rest of the national team. Her support and ability to listen to me (even at my lowest) has been second to none. I truly believe that she deserves this award as I don't know if I would be back in work leading a team if it wasn't for her.

Beth Doyle

In the last few years I have really struggled with mental health issues and Beth has always been there for me – a call, a text or pulling me aside for a chat, she knows what to say and always makes me feel better. During my long sickness she took time out of her chaotic and busy day to just have a chat, which made me feel I was still part of the team.  I was made to feel better having had a call from Beth, where she kept me in the loop and can honestly say she helped lift my spirits.

Angela Dunn

I have had the pleasure of working alongside Angela for many years and during this time I have witnessed her remarkable ability to make other feel at ease by establishing an atmosphere of comfort and trust. Angela has a fun yet calming nature, exceptional and attentive listening skills and creates a space where everyone’s opinions are heard and respected. I am nominating Angela for this award as she does not recognise herself as the wonderful individual that she is and the value she brings to us all at Team WAST.
