Stay Safe Over the Winter Months

We often see a rise in 999 calls during the colder months of the year. You can help us to help you this winter by using our services wisely and keeping 999 calls for life-threatening emergencies only.

The colder weather can affect your health and can be particularly dangerous for older people, young children and those with underlying health conditions.

If you have underlying health conditions, you should always make sure you have enough of your medication and take this you where you go.

If you choose to go outside, make sure you wrap up warm by wearing suitable clothing and footwear suitable for the conditions. Reduce the risk of trips and falls by taking care icy conditions.

It is always a good idea to wear layers as this can keep you warmer than one thick jumper.

You should seek help and advice if you start to feel unwell. You can get help and advice from:

  • Your pharmacy – A pharmacist can give treatment advice for a range of minor illnesses or common problems like coughs and colds. Find your local pharmacy.
  • NHS 111 Wales – The NHS 111 Wales online symptom checkers can help if you are unwell and unsure what to do. You will be asked a series of questions based on your symptoms and guided on what to do next. Visit the NHS 111 Wales website.
  • Your GP – You may be able to speak to a GP online, over the phone or go in for an appointment if they think you need to.
