New Non-Executive Director appointed to Welsh Ambulance Service Board

The Welsh Ambulance Service has appointed a new Non-Executive Director to its Board.


The Welsh Government has appointed Dr Umar Ahmad for four years, beginning his term on 1 April 2026 until 31 March 2030.

Dr Ahmad is a highly experienced clinician who for the past decade, has served as a partner at his GP practice in Nottingham, where he plays a key role in both clinical leadership and service delivery.


Dr Ahmad is also the Clinical Director of Arrow Primary Care Network, a collaboration of five GP surgeries providing care to approximately 40,000 patients.

Colin Dennis, Chair of the Welsh Ambulance Service, said: “Congratulations to Dr Ahmad on his appointment.

“He brings a wealth of experience, not only at Board level but also with face-to-face patient care.

“His range and diversity of knowledge will help us shape our long-term strategic goals.

“I speak for the whole Board when I say we are looking forward to working with Dr Ahmad to help us achieve our core objectives.”

Under Dr Ahmad’s leadership, the Arrow Primary Care Network has pioneered innovative approaches to patient care, including the integration of dedicated mental health teams within general practice for both children and adults.

The network has also expanded multidisciplinary working by incorporating paramedics, physiotherapists, pharmacists and social prescribers into primary care services.


Dr Ahmad holds further leadership roles within the local GP Federation and is an active member of the Nottinghamshire Local Medical Committee.

He also brings valuable board-level experience and currently serves on the Board of Nottinghamshire University Hospitals NHS Trust.


He has a strong interest in preventative medicine and is particularly focused on leveraging digital solutions to improve efficiency and outcomes within healthcare organisations.

Dr Ahmad said: “It is a privilege to be appointed to the Board of the Welsh Ambulance Service, a critical public service in Wales.

“While there are undoubtedly challenges ahead, I am looking forward to applying my experience and knowledge to help the service achieve its strategic objectives and be the very best it can be for the people of Wales.”
