People who have a learning disability, learning difficulty or are autistic or neurodivergent

We understand that some people may need extra support when calling 999. Our call handlers will do their best to communicate clearly, listen carefully, and give you time to explain what is happening.

We will:

  • use clear and simple language
  • repeat information if needed
  • give you extra time to answer questions
  • speak calmly and clearly
  • help carers, family members or support staff provide information if needed

We know it can help to understand what happens when an ambulance arrives, so we’ve created Easy Read leaflets and videos.

When crews arrive, they carry out seven important checks to assess your condition and decide the care you may need.
