Bank holiday message from the Welsh Ambulance Service

The Welsh Ambulance Service is urging the public to act responsibly over the summer bank holiday weekend.

The Trust is reminding the public about the alternatives to 999 in order to protect its precious resources for those who need them most.

Recommendations include:

  • If you are unwell or have a minor injury, you can visit the NHS 111 Wales website or try Albot - The NHS Wales Digital assistant, which can help you find answers to most questions and can help you access the right care, in the right place, at the right time.
  • Stock up on prescription medications before the three-day weekend when GP surgeries will be closed.
  • Ensure you have a fully stocked first aid kit to care for minor injuries at home, including remedies for common ailments like coughs, sore throats and diarrhoea.
  • Look out for family, friends and neighbours who are especially vulnerable.
  • Consume alcohol in moderation, eating before you drink and alternating alcoholic beverages with soft drinks.
  • Pre-arrange your transport home and never drive under the influence of drink or drugs.

 

Services such as local pharmacies and Minor Injury Units can also provide advice and treatment for a range of non-urgent health concerns.

Paul Underwood, Deputy Director of Operations at the Welsh Ambulance Service, said: “Bank Holidays are always a busy time for us and that’s why we’re asking for your help to make sure ambulances are available for those in the most serious need.

“Calling 999 for a non-emergency could delay help for someone facing a life-threatening situation so please think carefully and use the most appropriate service for your needs.

“Remember that 999 should not be used for minor conditions and just because you arrive by ambulance, doesn’t mean you’ll be seen any quicker in hospital.”

The Trust is also urging drivers to take extra care over the busy holiday weekend.

  • Always wear your seatbelt.
  • Leave plenty of space between vehicles.
  • Pay attention to speed limits and traffic flow.
  • Turn off or stow away your mobile phone.
  • Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Minimise in-car distractions – ask passengers to keep noise down.
  • In case of a breakdown, carry high-visibility clothing and move to a safe place before calling for help.

 

Paul continued: “Bank Holidays also mean more traffic, more distractions, and greater risk on the roads.

“If you’re driving, alcohol and drugs have no place behind the wheel.

“Even small amounts can slow your reaction time and cloud your judgement so if you’re planning to enjoy a drink with friends or family, arrange a safe way home.

Don’t risk your life – or someone else’s and let’s keep our emergency services free for the people who really need them.”
