Ambulance worker's double challenge for the Alzheimer's Society

A WELSH Ambulance Service worker is taking on a 26-mile hike and skydive to raise money for charity.

Laura Livall, 47, a Duty Control Manager based in Cwmbran, will be jumping out of a plane in May and taking part in her fourth Trek26 of the Brecon Beacons in June in memory of her gran Jean Charles.

Laura, who has worked for the Trust for 17 years, and is originally from Scotland, will be fundraising for the Alzheimer’s Society, a charity that helps support people living with dementia, their carers and their families.

She said: “This will be my fourth time participating in the Trek26 of the Brecon Beacons, but I’ve completed other walking challenges, including the Macmillan Mighty Hikes Wye Valley twice and The Gower in recent years, both 26 miles.

“I chose the Trek26 as an annual event as I wanted to push myself each year and raise money for a cause close to my heart.

“My gran lived with dementia, and she was my real life ‘super gran.’

“So, if I can be just a little bit super and do my part for charity, then why not be braver and take on a skydive as well as a trek?

“Although I’m not quite sure what she would say about this.”

On the tandem skydive, Laura will reach a height of 10,000 feet and speeds of up to 120mph, and a total elevation gain of 932m on the 26-mile trek.

Laura said: “Dementia is something that affects everyone, whether that’s a colleague, friend or family member and as long I’m fit and healthy then I’m able to help others, then why not keep pushing myself?

“I’m hoping for some sunshine or at least clear skies on both events, but I will be completing them regardless (as long as it’s safe).”

Laura’s colleague Carla Hope, a Clinical Support Desk nurse, said: “Laura has been tirelessly doing events to raise money for the last couple of years and I couldn’t be prouder.

“To be taking on two large challenges for the Alzheimer’s Society this year is phenomenal.

“I have no doubt that she will complete both challenges and I wish her the absolute best of luck.”
